Interesting. My husband says like you, machines are better for him when training around certain problems he's got whereas I find myself having more problems with the machines. I'm 5'5" and you probably are not positioning yourself properly....the machines take the stress off of your joints and connective tissues.....
Your seat shoudl prob be set to a 1...I usually set mine to a 2.....try adjusting the seat postioning...or try a different version of the same machine...if your gym has it available
