A great way to increase your deads, without actually DOING them... is to hit exercises like good mornings or rack deadlifts... they will allow you to increase your lower back strength as well as overall pulling strength without going through the entire pulling motion of deadlifts...
Also, if you are worried about your waistline, wear a weightbelt... many pros do this as it takes the focal point of the pressure off the obliques (which will cause them to grow outward) and places it on the front of your abdominals... so not only will you be hitting the front of your abs, but you will start to maintain a contoured V shape through your obliques.
