I lived in Denver for a while, and found an iron-only gym to train at (those are always my first choices). Turns out this one was primarily frequented by homosexual men - perfect! I could talk to men without worrying about them hitting on me, and they pretty much just ignored me while I was lifting. So yes, I can understand the reason for Curves; however, if you don't train in a gym with hard core lifters, chances are you'll never be incented to become a hard core lifter. So, I will only lift at gyms with the "hard core" reputation. My current gym has been great; people pretty much leave me alone, they have adjustable racks suitable for powerlifting, and they let me use chalk.
