Setting: Academic Building ‘N’, Room 207. Time 2040 – 2 Wednesdays ago

I enter the class room and take my seat at the end of the second row on the right. Waiting for class to start Russia approaches me and asks for “help with a problem”. Being ever so inclined to assist, I oblige her. Shortly thereafter, I learned that I have just inadvertently helped her cheat with a question on the “take-home’ exam given to her in lieu of her presence at the “in-class” exam held the week before. Had she informed me when she initially asked for help, that it was the exam I was assisting her with, I would have refused my input. I felt that was plain wrong.

I waited until the end of class and approached Dr. B. I informed him that I had helped her without knowing.

After class today, I was standing by my car talking to Surfer Girl about the meaning of life, when I noticed Russia making a bee-line for me. I knew that she was coming to talk to me, because prior to leaving the class room I heard her requesting her “take-home” exam from Dr. B.

“You know, I got my test back and it says on there that I got points taken off for getting help.”

“You asked me to help you with a problem…you never told me it was the exam.”

“How old are you that you feel the need to tell on me.”

“Sweetheart, this is college, not high-school. I bust my ass making the grades needed to pass my classes. I don’t have anyone helping me on my exams, do you really think it is fair for you to get help on yours? You are lucky that you are still enrolled in this college and not expelled. And, my admission of inadvertent assistance was to protect myself, because helping someone cheat is considered to be just as bad as cheating. I am not about to get myself kicked out of school because you can’t pass an open notes/open book exam. How much easier does he need to make it for you? And, for future reference, it is a bad idea to come to class and ask for help on an exam. You are not a friend of mine. We are not tight like that. So, for you to come to me or anyone who is not your friend, is not the wisest of decisions, especially when doing so could potentially ruin that person’s academic career. If you are gonna cheat, be wise about it.”

“Well, I hope you are happy.”

“I hope you realize you picked the wrong one.”

With that she turned and walked away.
