I don't volume train at all and I've made some of my best gains in the last year. When I feel I'm running a little ragged, I take a few days off (4-7) and then change my routine a little. I'll follow a routine for around 3 months or more. Right now I just started doing a 4 day split (like Yate's in his Blood and Guts video, but less excercises in each workout), but normally stick to a 3 day split. You can definetly over-train on HIT, the key thing is knowing when to take a rest.
