I've never had stuffed cabbage but had been curious to how these might taste. I did'nt follow anyones recipe and just threw some ingrediants together to come up with my own version of "modified" rolls. I'm pretty happy with the way they came out and they tasted DELICIOUS!!!
1 head of cabbage
Filling:
2 pds lean ground turkey
2 cloves crushed garlic (fresh)
1 diced onion
1 red (bell) pepper
1 yellow pepper
1 diced zucchini
1 lg egg (used white portion only)
1 can Del Monte crushed tomatoes (oregano/basil/garlic flavor)
salt/pepper to taste
The first thing I did I cored and cut my cabbage head in half. I then placed half of the head of cabbage in a large pot over high heat and added water to cover boiling the cabbage for 15 minutes, or until it became pliable and soft. I then drained and allowed the leaves to cool completely.
For the filling: I roasted my garlic, peppers, zucchini and onion first. Set them to the side and then browned my turkey meat. I then combined the vegetables and turkey together adding the crushed tomatoes and egg white stirring the mixture gently for a min. I let the filling simmer onthe stove top for 10 min on med/high heat.
Once the filling was done I immediately stuffed and rolled the cabbage leaves. I believe I made about 30 rolls. The sauce left from the meat filling was poured over the stuffed cabbage.
There definately were more rolls made than I could eat at once soo the remaining 26 rolls I divided up in ziplock bags and froze! The rolls are definately awesome in taste, healthy to eat but very time consuming to make. Definately worth the effort though.
