Actually......
they can be a very useful tool to keep track of progress. Yes, they are +/- 6% off usually, but it is off consistently. That means that if you stand on it and you get a BF result of 20%, that number might not be correct. BUT, if you stand on it again two weeks later and your BF is 16%, then you can be pretty sure that you have lost about 4% BF. I have used those scales to track progress, but I always have a caliper test done to get a baseline to start from.
