You can only do so much Hash. Don't give up on him, i'm not saying that as clearly he could kill himself and I am not overstating this but taking the course of action you are is the right way to go. Give him good solid information and advise him of exactly the consequences if he contiues with what he's doing.

I was really fat when I started cycling, about 40%. I got down to 280 just under 20% If he is lifting regular and eating lots of water and protien... well it worked well enough for me is all I can say. Maybe I was lucky.

Yeah this guy prolly wouldnt exactly pay attention to his electrolytes would he. Prolly wouldn't do cardio either. And if he did he'd prolly overdoit. Good point I'll shut up.

Hash, as stated sometimes all you can do is talk to people. If he wont listen its on him, continue to be the voice of reason, continue to try, but all things considered its up to him. Karma on you for trying, continue to do so, maybe at the end of this cycle, when he's seen little to no results, his opinion will change and he will be more open to listen to your advice.
