Gator, I was incarcerated for nine months before in a county jail, they did have some machines to work out on (if you are in good disciplinary standing at the jail). In the state where I live the state prison (at least according to guys who have been there) does have free weights, you sign up and go on a waiting list and it takes like a year of good behavior to get on. If you get any major disciplinary actions against you your kicked off.

a lot of this stype of thing is changing all over the nation. in county jails, state prisons, and federal prisons .. they are changing things around. no smoking, no weights, no porn for these guys. the county jail in my city is already like that ..you dont have to worry bout that shit though if you dont do things to get yourself locked up

First of all, I don't wanna give the impression that I'm a hardened criminal asshole . As I mentioned before I had a substance abuse problem which led to the crime I was jailed for. I'm clean now and I don't plan on ever going back.

And your right about things changing, but alot of things are the fault of some inmate suing the jail, many times over something stupid. Smoking is going by the wayside because people sued saying they were forced to endure second hand smoke (this one is sorta of legitimate). Meals are portioned in most places because people sued saying they were made fat (where I was didn't have them yet but they will soon, but they don't force you to eat large portions). Weights are being taken out of higher security levels, minimum/moderate security levels still have most of that stuff.

The large majority of prisoners are not doing life, and 85% are substance abusers. I think treatment and education/vocational programs are important to teach prisoners skills so they can be safe, productive members of society when released. From being in there I can tell you most guys there aren't evil, they need rehabilitation and opportunities.

I agree, I have been incarcerated many times (Hot tempered Irishmen) but not so much anymore, I kinda grew out of that phase. I do remember smoking being an issue so most of the inmates would just chew. As far as the meals go, that's news to me. We were given 3 squares but they were hardly proportioned I guess it's about time. I don't remember ever seeing weights. I have been to about 6 different jails all for different lengths of time from 6 months to 1 week. To be honest it actually reminds me of army basic training. without the bars .

I would like to say that it's VERY cool that you are clean, I never had a substance abuse problem but I know many people who have and quite honestly it seems to be a very big demon to beat but you did it. NICELY DONE.

i know from used to work for a state corrections facility that weights and things to that nature are a MUST. thats keeps them active and if there not active then ALOT of problems start so i very much promote weights and educational programs
