FAAK....COMPUTER EXPERTS...NEEDS YOUR HELP AGAIN....

i hate computers... my cd burners is faaked up....

anyway i'm trying to install a completely new harddrive.....but need a bunch of stuff of my current comp...burners busted........can i just add on another drive as a slave.....install win xp...copy over info i want to save, then just take the old drive out??

or will it be all messed up cause it was a slave but is now the master drive etc..

and get a new case or a kit at the very least, go for hotswappable drives. That way, everytime you fill up a hard drive but you don't want to back it up, just push a button, it pops out of a plug in the back, and you slide a new HD in without opening the computer and you can make the hotswappable drives the slave drive. It comes in really handy when you have two computers set up with that hardware and you need to keep one available for business and regular usage, while you can get a DVDR or DVDRAM burner which will back up Gigs at a time as well as CDs too and use the burner on your other computer to do the back ups while you do your business on the computer you wish to continue using. Its kind of an expensive way to do things, but if you have the money, its not much more expensive to have a set up like that compared to a normal computer and the headache of installing drives the old-fashioned way and partioning disks.

i don't use much space up.......just need a new hardrive

so hermiti...just plug it in, install xp onto it, transfer files, and unplug the old one and i should be good to go??

That'll work. The easiest way would be to set the new drive as master, leave the old unplugged. Load xp, get yourself up and running, then add the second drive as a slave. Copy all of your data over then trash the old drive. Even easier still would be to burn the data you need to cd then just copy it over to the new hdd.

i've never heard of that term slave as the 2nd hard drive

Yup, just like that.

Take the old one out, install new one, set up your OS, get it up and running. Put the old one in as secondary ( slave drive ) on the same IDE cable. copy over data. programs should be re-installed.
