Alot of the Beowulf stuff was derived with heavy influences of Nordic Mythology and Hebraic Creation combine I think. It was written at the time Christians were moving into Germany and some of the Nordic/Scandanavian legends started getting intermingled with Judeo-Christian literature and teaching. For instance, if memory serves me, the Grendel was supposed to have been a direct descendant of Cain.
