"Project XENU", a chance to embarass Tom Cruise and Scientology, failed (great idea)

Background

There was a South Park episode where they made fun of Scientology, and it led to Issac Hayes quitting. Additionally, there was pressure put on Comedy Central for them to yank the episode.

On Wednesday night, Comedy Central pulled a repeat of the episode of South Park that caused Issac Hayes to quit the show. That episode made fun of Scientology and featured Tom Cruise refusing to come out of the closet. Reportedly, Tom Cruise put pressure on Viacom, the parent company of Comedy Central. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, released this statement through their lawyer:

Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for Earth has just begun! Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!

And again, just so you know, I violated all of my principles and actually called the lawyer himself and asked if this was their real statement. It is.

So, what do we do about this?

Well, a forum I'm on decided that something had to be done about this. They got donations from forum members totalling $4000 in order to rent 2 planes with banners behind them. One banner was to be behind each plane and they would read:

- Hail XENU <3 OT
- The Baby Belongs to XENU

In Scientology doctrine, Xenu (also Xemu) is an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living, and continue to cause problems today.

There's much more, but that's the important stuff. Xenu is like the devil to Scientologists.

"The Baby Belongs to XENU" banner - well, we all know Tom Cruise knocked up Katie Holmes, so that was why that banner was created.


Time and Place

So what's the big deal with 2 planes with banners behind them? Well, Mission Impossible III premiered last night at Grauman's Chinese Theater. The 2 planes were supposed to take off at about 5pm PST and circle around LA, then close in and circle around the theater. This was going to be done to give Tom Cruise a slap in the face because of his overly defensive position on Scientology.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone had nothing to do with any of this.


Ummm, where are the planes?

The whole thing never happened. Apparently it was foggy in the LA area yesterday and the tower at the airport would not let the planes take off.


The plan to do all this was great and amazingly well organized. Unfortunately the weather shut the whole thing down. I would've loved to see the result if it happened, and you could've bet that on a future episode of South Park there would have been some planes flying with those banners behind them.

Oh well, shit happens. Maybe some other time.

That would have been funny. I would like to see Xenu fight Jesus, BTW. Maybe Matt and Trey can put that in an episode of South Park like they did with Jesus vs. Satan.
