I think there's something inherently wrongheaded with the idea of first thinking "I want a tattoo" and then trying to think of a design and a location that works. For something as permanent as a tattoo, a symbol or design or image that has some meaning to your life should be where the idea starts, then you start looking for a way to make it work.

Got my daughters name and birth date around my wrist. Which my watch covers up. I've got a shit load since then, so I wear long sleeve shirts to work and if I don't that means I'm not making enough money to give a shit if they can see it or not. The important rules are.

1. Never get flash from a tattoo shop as stated before 100 ****ers already have it.

2. I've sat for more than one 12hr session before and saw the same tribal tats done over and over again. After the person left, usually a white kid, all the artists would joke about "what ****ing tribe did he come from?" Now I don't knock anyone for what they get just think beforehand.

3. Have it mean something, If it does you'll it love forever.

4. Realize that if you get something remotely unique, everyone, till the day you die will be asking “what’s that? Cool can I see the rest, take your shirt off, grabbing you from out of nowhere, and can I copy you. Hence the reason I cover mine up most the time when I go out.

On a side note I did know a guy that had "your name" tat'ed on his ass. Used to win lots of drinks at the bar betting people that he had "your name" on his ass.
