Kite Runner DVD Review........

The book has been on the best seller list for seemingly forever and I just watched the movie this weekend. I didn't read the book because I was skeptical if I would find it interesting. At least the movie was interesting though. The movie is worth watching though and I really liked it, even though it was kind of sad. The movie starts out with the main character getting a phone call in the US from a relative living in Pakistan to hurry and come there as he was ill. Then the movie goes into the basis of the story and transports the viewer back to preSoviet invasion of Afghanistan. It shows the main character as a child and his servant child/ best friend growing up. Their favorite sport was running kites where they would fly kites fast in the air and try to clip other kites strings and then retrieve the kite that had fallen. Some really bad things happen where some teenage bullies forcibly sodomizes the 6 or 7 year old servant boy and the main character who is a year or two older is too frightened to defend him. Their friendship goes sour, the main character and his father flee Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and the main character grows up to be a writer. His task in going back there was to find and rescue the son of his former best friend and servant from the Taliban.

It was a sad movie but worth watching. Half of the movie was subtitled, but still very much worth watching.
