Why should we give a sh*t about reducing our carbon footprint?

I thinkl that most people feel even if they do their part, it won't make much of a difference because everyone isn't doing it. To some degree that's true. A typical to each his own. It's hard to dramatically change your lifestyle to make the earth a better place to live 100 years from now. Do I recycle, yes. Do I have a compost heap in my yard that pisses off the neighbors, yes. But I also use ( and throw out ) plastic bags from the supermarket or styrofoam containers for the leftovers from a restaurant.

FlirtFromHell. DO you REALLY NEED links to another study ???? You mean to tell me that in the past 20 years you haven't noticed just a few problems with the way North America functions? First of all, I asked "Is this truly the American Way" in the hopes that one of you Americans would step up and say "No Martano, it isn't. I agree, we need to conserve." But no, you respond with just more mish mash.

I agree, it is frustrating when I do my part, and then others DO NOT. But that doesn't mean I will contribute. I will not be the one responsible for the downfall. (if and when it happens)

FlirtFromHell: The reason I insult is because it is just like i said. There are certain topics that are non-debateable, and there is NO need to debate on whether or not we should protect our planet. I question anyone's sanity if they want to debate that topic.

It is just about equal to debating: -Whether or not it is ok to molest children.
-Whether or not it is ok to drink and drive
-Whether or not it is ok to be racist.
-Whether or not it is ok to steal.
Do you see my point now?? If someone came on here and asked why any of these subjects or 'wrong', I would call them a complete idiot as well. Then would you tell me we need to debate that topic as well? There is no 'critical thinking' needed here.

Seriously? I responded with mish mash? You called him an idiot, compared this to drinking & driving, and then told him to get a fucking education!!

I don't need links, but in his post he is clearly asking for ANSWERS! So, providing links and 'educating' him on the pros of it all, how he personally would benefit if he made changes, etc would have been a better response, not throwing the insults at him.

I completely understand and agree with your view on the subject, BUT, I also understand where Ironmako is coming from. I understand how frustrating it is to feel like you as one person can't make a difference. Can you seriously not understand where I'm coming from and what Ironmako was looking for?

After his post, there was about 5 more posts by different members that all took his side, (to my disbelief) If you support my view then why didn't you fill him in??? If you want politeness then it is up to you to do it. That aint my style sweethart. (though you could probably convince more people than me)

Okay, whatever, so if your friend or neighbor came to you and said, "I don't understand, why should I recycle etc..., what difference am I going to make in the world?" You'd call him an idiot and walk away? That is EXACTLY what you've done here. IM was simply asking for answers - all you had to do was tell him how & why him taking his part would be beneficial to this planet. Why can't you understand that?

If someone truly didn't understand why it was wrong to be racist, steal, drink & drive, or molest children, first I'd ask them what rock they'd been living under, then I would give them answers. Insulting people won't get you anywhere in life. Educate them, it's the better choice.

Look, you seem like a nice girl, but people aren't all made of strawberries. I realize that I can be very harsh often, and I realize that insults are completely useless and counter-productive. We aint all perfect, but I know one thing, you shouldn't need to be told why we ALL need to conserve. It IS 2008 remember?

Sarcasm is a big part of this board, and a few of those responses were pretty sarcastic IMO. But, all the more reason why one who feels so strongly about it should step up and educate. Not only could you change one persons mind, but maybe you could change the minds of 5 or 6.

It is 2008, but unfortunately there are still a lot of people in this world that don't know what we should or shouldn't be doing to help protect the planet and why. The and why obviously being an important part of this equation, had you not been so rude, the two of us could have blown them away with answers to the and why instead of arguing about it.
