IM, even though only being one person doesn't seem like it would make a big difference it really will. You'll be one of many who are already making changes and taking a stand.

From your example, say you can make changes and add 5 days.. well then, say every IS member makes those same changes, we have 110,589 members each of them saving 5 days .. we'd all save 552,945 days. Then say each of those 110,589 members told 5 people about the changes they made and got those 5 people to make the same changes, now we have 552,945 people saving 5 days.. 2,764,725 days .. and so on...

It really wouldn't be that difficult, think of all the people you know, family, work, friends, etc.. it's about standing up for what you believe in and getting others to believe as well. Some people can't afford to make huge changes but every little bit will help.

Okay, I know it's Wal-Mart, but here's a link to their new commercials on their new Save & Live Green campaign.. at the end of every commercial they say, "if every wal-mart shopper, all 200 million of us..." these are great examples of how you, being only one, can make a difference.. Wal-Mart. Save Money. Live Better.

You can argue the position of conservation all day long from a perspective of principle, and most rational people would be hard pressed to disagree with you. On principle.

But you can do the "right thing" all day long and it not make a difference.

That is where we truly are at in all of this.

The decreases in demand for fuel that the US is beginning to make (b/c of economics, not idealism) will be quickly swallowed up by increased demand in India/China. As more of their explosive populations enter their middle classes, western attempts at conservation will quickly become negligible. It may "feel good" but its not going to make a difference.

I'm not sure how much of a student of human nature you are, but I can tell you this; the human animal is very predictable.

Concepts such as principles, morality, ideals, introspection, higher thought, etc. are only possible when basic biological needs are met first.

If you deprive the human animal of its basic biological necessities it will behave more like an animal, and less like a human.

Its much easier for people in western civilizations to conceptualize the idea of modifying their lifestyles for the "greater good", than it is for people in the developing world. This is because westerners have the luxuries to do so.

Idealism will come to an end very quickly once hunger sets in.

The green movement is very peaceful/utopian. It has no answers to the questions of China and India. It can only address people in the west who volunteer to cooperate.

I remember a professor I once had, he was the honors, graduate student advisor for computer science at my university. When he thought a student was wasting their time in a given approach to solving a problem he liked to say "you're rearranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic"

And one other thought...before you close debates on "global warming" and such ideas you might consider this...Questioning what others have told you is not ignorance...however, blindly believing what others tell you may be.

I think that the only way to save the world is with my complicated yet seemingly simple plan........here it is:


#1 (I could use letters instead of numbers but I find myself to be more of a numerical kind of person as opposed to an alphabetical one)


#1 Completely surrender the power of the world to me and build a monument to me and worship it.

#2 Invade Iraq again...........why not, it will really piss off everyone who wants us to pull out

#3 Invade Poland.............I don't have a good reason but as the liberator of the world, I don't need one either

#4 I forgot where I was going with this .............hang on...........oh yeah,

#4 I will decide who lives and dies and I will build "re-education camps" and will resettle approximately haf of the worlds population to these camps.

#5 Having just cut the population of the world in half = more food, and other stuff for the rest of us

#6 I will control the population through fear and oppression (edit this one out before posting)

#6 (revised) Control population of "common" people through sterilization. Allowing persons to have children as I see fit.
