Recently I have been asked to find out where a picture image was taken, on what day, and time etc. This image was taken from facebook by our HR department. The issue was the person in question was wearing a company shirt when this event took place.
I use a program called geosetter, its free and will show you in a google map exactly where a picture was taken.
I was able to take some of my own iphone pictures and it gives me the location within 3 feet of where it actually was taken.
I even looked up some of my mexico pictures that were sent by others to me via email.
This service on the iphone is called location services, it can be used for many things, even to track your Iphone in real time. Lots of programs have the ability to use location services, be aware of what your turning on and when you do it.
On cameras its called metadat or geotagging. its hidden inside the picture.
There is a lot more data here than people even know. Camera type, what program was used to open the picture last, the name of the computer etc etc. Its amazing how much personal data is there.
I believe by law in the USA and Canada that this feature needs to have the ability for the user to turn it on or off, the issue here is lots of cameras are imported these days and not manufactured in the us so they dont comply with local law. You may not be able to turn this feature off on the cheaper cameras. If you paid 700+ for something like a cannon, Pentax or the like you should have the ability to turn it off.
I am not saying that this is a bad feature, just be aware of what it can and cant do.
