disposing of old ammo

figured since i've seen a few firearm threads here i'd ask...what's the best way,and legal way mind you,to get rid of unused,unopened old ammo?i had an SKS and an AK-47-both Chinese Norinco-from the 80's.once my state changed our laws and then when i resigned from LE service i no longer desired to keep the weapons so sold them to a legal registered dealer...but i totally forgot that i still had an entire wooden case of Chinese made 7.63x39 ammo from about 89-90...!about 2,000-2,500 rounds sealed in tins encased in a wood crate.i'm moving soon and don't want nor need them anyway so i've been trying to figure out how to go about this.i know when i was 'on the job' we'd take weapons,ammo off the streets if civilians brought them in to be destroyed after running the firearms thru ballistics to verify they weren't used in crimes but not sure if any departments still or will do that anymore.any advice would help...thnx,roc.

You can take it to any police station and just hand it in, they have a 'no questions asked' policy about receiving and destroying unused/unwanted ammo.

used to anyway...lol! once they changed my states laws i moved to one where class 3 status was aquired fairly easily,esp if you were involved in LE.had all types of shit from MP5's to STEN WWII subs...was fun but it never lasts forever.little by little every state will be gunless...then lawless.only the bad guys will get to play.the rest of us will have to depend on the cops,half of who are afraid to go into the places these ghetto dwelling scum conduct business.it's a shame.really miss shooting my toys off but def ain't worth goin to fed prison for 20yrs over a simple thing like a 30rnd magazine.fuck it,i'm goin to our main citys department this week and just walk in with a 100lb case of ammo,lol.i know they'll problly wonder "wtf is this dude nuts?!"...lol!

Hey rocco, for some reason I thought you lived in Florida. If that was the case then I could gladly take care of those for you but if not as elochai suggested your local LE should take them off your hands. I know they do that in Florida anyway.

When you throw them in the fire they explode and the lead doesn't go too far.
But there is always the possibility of an accident for sure.

Most local LE will accept ammo & weapons, but personally I wouldn't seek out any LE personnel. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I think about my past and it catching up to me sometimes. I go out of my way to avoid a cruiser if I see one on the road too. Given your background, I probably wouldn't sweat this and simply bring it in.

I never would have any ammo that got that old, I'm a city slicker turned redneck and tear through 5.56, 7.62 and 0.380cal like it's running water

I just googled "turning in ammunition city state" you supply your own city and state. It directed me to a local indoor shooting range that accepts ammunition.
