Okay, where are the SLDL proponents? I can't, for the life of me seem to master this movement (probably why i avoid it). I always seem to utilize too much of my hams and lower back. I have heard this was the best back exercise of all, however, I need some tips to better execute this movement. I know, keep your back straight and head up, but what other tips will help me get the most out of this exercise.

But I REALLY prefer to do 'em w/a SLIGHT bend to the knees...I just haven't heard of them being a back exercise, other than for your erectors...
And reg. deads and my favorite pet hypers would do ya better than SLDL's, IMO... The main difference is, you can't drop the bar all the way down to your instep, but the stretch you experience in the hams is good...Even w/the limited ROM as compared to SL...And arching the back helps your ham progress... And using db's for 'em is another change I like to add in... But, like I said, I do them for hams, not back...Anyone else do them for back??... |

Unless you're taking the bar WAY out from your legs(dangerous form!), it's not a back exercise. I agree with DTD, if ya want to built a thick, wide, massive, strong back, ya got do heavy regular deadlifts. SLDL are excellent for ham strength & developement though.
