Thoughts on self preservation.....

...I will keep the "peripheral" concepts in Mind. Makes good sense, translates well from small arms training(landmarks and daydreaming etc). I haven't even thought about this stuff for a long time. Aside from bag work and grappling with some old wrestling bros, I have prolly become pretty rusty. Any books you might recommend? there's a lot of Fake tough guy stuff, but I figure you may have come across some that might be valuable.

For the person that has limited time to train for self defense:

* Place two 28 inch sticks on the floor in the shape of a "V" ( or use tape). In between sets of lifting do this...

The open end of the"V" reprsesent to shoulder width of the person that is attacking you. Start slow. You are standing at the point. Your feet are shoulder width apart. When the person punches w/ his right, you step with your left foot along the "V" turn your body and deliver your earslap.

Then repeat on the other side. Your hands are always up. Then learn to bend with the knees kinda like a sqauting motion.

Once you get the footwork it is very difficult for someone that has "commited" to a strike to hit you.

Self defense moves have to be gross motor and sloppy.

Fine motor skills leave your body when you have an adrenaline dump.

Since according to extensive studies fights start with an outstretched limb that is where you spend the majority of your time learning to prevent.

Most fights end on the ground. So if you can give a person a dose of concrete poisoning (using a throw or reap) they become disoriented.

I talked with some groundfighters that got attacked by a second person once they took their assailant to the ground and tried working the guard.

So even though I partnered with a fella who is a fantastic BJJ man, I wanted to learn how to protect myself when on my back. I would suggest everyone do the same. But on the street, don't go directly to the guard unless you have to. Multiple oppenents, knives etc change the game.

Let me tell you another way to cheat.... DISTANCING. I always work at arms length. If a person moves into that space, I very subtley move in an angle to gain that distance back. My hands are always up and open in a non-threatening manner.

That way everyone that sees the fight syas that I was the one being attacked. If my fists are closed, it appears that though I am a willing participant in the fight. We both go to jail then.

You have to be able to defend yourself in the courtroom as well as the street.
