Help for my Dad...

Guys and Girls,

Here is the situation. My dad is only 45, he is about 5'8-5'9 and like 220 lbs. If he had a bf% of 10 or lower, that would be great. However, its much higher than that. He's fat to put it simple. He is very unhappy about it, he has struggled with weight problem ever since my Grandpa Died (his dad). He was diagnosed with depression, and was on zoloft, as I was too. That was in '92. He is not lazy all the time, he plays tennis, works out in the yard, etc. I can get him in the gym, as he used to go everyday for "light" cardio. I just would like to have some kind og plan before I get him in the gym so he won't get discouraged right off the bat. Any help with diets, training, etc. Would be great. He is not going to take any aas, I might could get him to take some clen. etc. but don't want to mess with any heart problems or anything like that. The low carb diet is not going to work for him IMO. But I guess anything is possible. I am not looking for him to be all ripped up and looking like myself..lol JK. But normal size in a 34 w pant, etc. I know he is capable with his body type, because he used to. *he also seems to gain alot of his weight in his thighs, and hips. If you need anymore info. please ask, I will be glad to give it to you. I want to help out my dads since of well being. I can't see him like this any longer.

he doesn't need any clen or eca at this poin, imo. i would say if you got him into the gym 3-5 times a week to lift weights and do light cardio afterwards, and just watch his diet : ie, no more eatin whatever he wants, he will be happy within months, exercise may also battle his depression

I think his diet will play the biggest role here, what kind of diet is he on?

I just tried to reply, but it didn't show, oh well. He is currently not on a diet. He tried the south beach diet, bit I think it was half assed. I am open to diet suggestions.

Put him on a balanced diet, 33%p/33%c/34%f
weight x 12

Not to challenge X's advice, but depression is heavily linked with over-eating, especially sugary foods. The insulin over-production contributes to the bouncing depression. Wouldn't it be a good idea to put him on a low carbohydrate diet so that his insulin levels can normalize quite fast and then possibly switch to a CKD or balanced diet with a calorie deficit?

Usually, one would start w/ a balanced diet w/ low-gi carbs for up to 4 weeks before they go into a CKD.

Actually, sugary foods do not cause depression; in reality, no one knows the real chemical pathway in the brain that causes depression - they just claim they know. You can even look at their ads, "some chemical imbalance". Yes, most people are ADDICTED to carbs/sugars, but that can't be overcome by crashing into a CKD w/o prior experience w/ it.

i dunno i've found myself to get just as messed up when i go extremely low with my carbs and sugar. not only to get get easily agitated but i notice a noticable decrease in my cognitive functioning

CL, its great to see you here bro. As for training, I'd recommend that he starts slow at 3 days a week just to get into it. For the first two weeks he could try a full upperbody routine one day and lower body routine the next workout day. After a couple of weeks, he could go to splitting up bodyparts more. A good split to begin with might be:

chest/bi's
back/tri's
legs
shoulders

He could do that for about 4-6 weeks and then change it up. If he's wanting to drop bodyfat he could do a higher volume routine of 12 to 15 reps each set and take only short rest breaks. It will take him a while to build up to that, but its a good goal.
