A few questions for you diet Gurus.

1) What is more signifacient when dieting to get cut a) calorie restriction, b) low carbs, or c) both.

I know that when you are bulking you pretty much eat everything in site to get in 4500-5500 calories, depending on your weight/goals. Tons of protien, shit load of carbs, and moderate fats.

But, when you are cutting you use carbs for energy during your workout and post workout for recooperation, protien for maintaining muscle, but what do you use the fat for?

I don't know if I am wording this question correctly but basically I would like to know what role each nutrient plays in when you are cutting.

well if you are dieting, it is most important that you burn more calories that you take in. otherwise you coudl still be eating 5000 calories of protein and fat and you probably wouldn't lose any weight (besides a little water weight from the carbs?)

fat can actually help you lose weight. if you are on CKD you get your energy from fats, since your body basically switches over from carbs to fat as energy. EFAs are important for fat loss. depends your style of diet, many people get their bulk of carbs in their post workout shake in the form of dextrose, this signals an insuline spike which should basically stop catibolism and shuttle nutrients to your muscles.

so they basically provide the same thing bulking as cutting if you arent on a specialized diet

Look at it this way, I can have a person eating under their daily caloric BMR but it can be pure sugar - see the logic.

when you're cutting your goal is to use FAT for energy in a process called ketosis - using carbs for energy will only allow for a higher muscle burning rate; since protein intake is converted to glucose at a 56% rate, the more your body needs the glucose/carbs the more protein will be converted - i.e. LOSS OF PROTEINS = LOSS of muscle


I don't know if I am wording this question correctly but basically I would like to know what role each nutrient plays in when you are cutting.
the question is way too vast to answer in one post; the easier way:

fats: if used properly will allow you to stay in a healthy metabolic rate and burn fat for energy

protein: help you build muscle and stay in a positive nitrogen balance

carbs: increase insulin, if used at high-GI levels too much, are great for making you fat

I guess it would help if I posted my current diet:

8am:
1/2 cup oatmeal w/ 1 packet splenda
10 egg whites or 2 serving of Micell Edge*

workout
pw: 1 serving whey Prot 23 g, Fat 1 g, Carbs 3 g
2 cups skim milk Prot 24 g, Fat 0g, Carbs 24 g

1 pm: 8 oz chicken
1-2 cups greens
1 tbsp fat free italian dressing

3:30 same

6pm: 6 oz ground beef (93/7) **
1-2 cups greens

8:30 same as 6

11:30 1 serving Micell Edge


*Micell Edge (Protein Blend)
Fat 10 g, Prot 32 g, Carbs: 12g (6 fiber, 6 sugar)

** 93/7 Ground Beef
per 4oz serving: Fat 8g, Prot 22 g, Carbs 0.

Stats: 6'11", 225lbs, bat fat% 12-15,
Cardio 40 minutes 5 days a week after weights.

Goal would be to get cut, not competion form, but cut up enough to see my abs, loose mu love handles, and feel more comfortable with myself. Also, get to a point with my deit were I can maintain my lean muscle and body fat %?

I don't have a problem doing cardio, Ijust have a tendancy to not stick with a long enough.

add some Udos choice about 2x a day.... for now, and every week we can alter it

Also, in regards to cardio. I usually do it after my workout 5 times a week for about an hour. Should I do 40 minutes with 20 being 65-70 % heart rate and the remaining 20 80-85% heart rate or just 60 minutes at 65%. I have read that going hi on the heart rate with burn muscle but it will also help you burn fat longer through out the day.
