Starvation?

This was posted on another board by a bro who said it was on the MCAT test. Any feedback?


After three days of starvation, the liver produces mass quantities of ketone bodies (acetoacetate and 3-hydroxybutyrate) from acetyl CoA generated from fatty acid oxidation. The brain begins to consume acetoacetate in place of glucose, thereby lowering the need for blood glucose even further. After several weeks of starvation, ketone bodies become the major fuel of the brain, markedly diminishing the need for glucose. Hence, less protein ( and therefore less muscle tissue) is degraded than in earlier stages of starvation.

This is 100% true; the state of ketosis is the same is the state of starvation. After about 3 weeks the body can derive at least 75% of it's need from ketones, and the rest from glucose/protein externally taken in.

How would you reintroduce food after the starvation period? Also, this does not seem very healthy, has anyone done this that you know of?

If you're asking if anyone has done ketosis - millions of people. If you're asking if anyone has done starvation, I'm sure there are people but I HIGHLY suggest against it. Ketosis is a healthy state once your body is used to it - it's not deadly unless you're diabetic.

After starvation usually food is reintroduced in 300-400calorie periods - I'm talking about REAL starvation.

Thanx Mr.X I doubt I'll be doing this myself. I can barely go without eating for 3 hours let alone several weeks.

What would be the starvation level for a 225lb person as myself. And what effects would it have on someone's mucles?

starvation would be at different levels for different people - I would say anything under wx9 is bad
