Hanuri, I train on areas where I feel my game needs to develop. Currently I am training more endurance, and maintain footspeed. I am good with explosive speed and stride, along with the ability to punish someone along the boards. So my concentration tends to be on endurance for the long shifts, Penatly kills, Shorthanded situations, etc.
Jumping is not as much a part of my training although I do some, My foot speed I like to keep up so I run hills forward and backwards. Backwards really helps to develop the foot speed and inner thighs. Run 5 miles daily, with interval sprinting, (run for 5 min sprint as hard as you can for 1 min, run for 4 min sprint as hard as you can for 90 seconds, run for 3 minutes, sprint as hard as you can for 2 min.) Brazils, are essential, using poles, stones, what ever you can, shuffle around as fast as you can with out crossing your feet over, many soccer teams use this drill as well. Run stairs sideways, to increase crossover ability and power. I do verticle jumping feet together 16, 24, 36 inch blocks, deep knee bends. And Squat, Squat, Squat,.. Jamir Jagr supposedly performs 100 squats a day. (I can not attest or deny this, it is just what I have heard). Power is essential in skating, however proper stride technique is even more important. Make sure you are using sound strides or all work is lost. Do you guys have slide boards over there in Finland? I would strongly suggest investing in one, you can watch tv or follow up on the posting here at MMS. while you work your stride and improve stabilization. That is just an idea of some of the dryland training that I perform, I also go to the gym on a 5 on 2 off rotation to continue to try to grow. I have to run right now, Let me know what you are looking to accomplish ant I can try to guide you in the right direction. BTW did you fix your connection/logon ability? I saw your other post about maybe not being able to log on any more. |

Sorry , no fixing up to date. However I stil can dig in via my mail"replay to post ..." and so on.Thanks for your reply and info. Few questions though; how long u been doing dry training(every summer during the past 20 yrs? if so i envy u I wasted too many summers and at 37 it´s not easy to get better...) , Do u train speed and jumping on separete days( I have different days for them)? How many dry workouts u do weekly( bb training not included)? How much do u weight?(i`m 225 lbs, 10 down from winter)
Ask this because I´d like to know if u have had any problems with knees over the yrs. I`ve had scopia in both knees, last one done about 2 months ago(the other last summer). That`s why I avoid running(only short intervals or sprints). Cycling(stationary and "real" cycling). My skating isn`t that good , but I manage to move enough since I play defence. Started again at age 23 so too many yrs was wasted already. Basicly I do same kind of drytraining as you but my weight training might differ a bit. I`ve figured in my genious head that since skating is done one leg at time it would be useful to train that way also. So my stregth moves are done one legged for this reason. I can`t squat anymore(back/ hip problem) but instead I do lunges. Also i try to minimize the strength gap between the legs- a little more work for the weaker one. Time to say adios but in meantime let`s keep in touch shall we?

Ok lets see. How long have been been Dryland training? Well I am 33 now so I would say about 15 years, after a while it just becomes habit, so even though I only play recreationally now, I just never stopped, besides I feel good after a nice morning run. I actually dryland train 3-4 days a week in the early AM. Wake up start your run, get into the sprints, then you are wide awake. Last time I weighed myself I was 218, I am 6'2" and my collegiate and minor league playing weight was 230 and I would say about 10-12% BF. I have never had a problem with my knees, I have had some nasty hip pointers but I am lucky and I have never had a knee problem.
If you can run sprints do it, however you do need your knees to play so do not over do it, you know your limitations. I am glad you mentioned cycling, I found that serious mountain biking not only helped my endurance but also leg drive/power, and assisted in balance. If you are doing Mtn, or street Cycling you will benefit from it, keep to the high gears when you slow down or you are taking off and really motor when you ride you will see a benefit. You back/hip problem does that prevent you from doing leg presses as well? If it does not then presses would be a good replacement if it does then lunges it will be. As far as one leg at a time training? I have never tried that concept, I can not imagine it would hurt. Keep in touch, it is nice knowing there is another Puckhead out here with me. |

Hi. My memory is really bad , bút i´d say this is my 5th summer with dry training. I was around your age or one year younger when I started. I play purely for the fun and enjoyment but still like to try to become better.
Agree 100% with cycling! I try to get 2-4 dry workouts/ week + 1-2 for the endurance. I´m aware being careful with knees, so i only do sprints max 50-100 meters and speed training for about 7-20 meters at time.(1 meter is about 2.5 foot perhaps). Endurance is my best part(rest pulse around 47 beats/min). The reason for not doing leg presses is in the gym I train; no leg press machine available. I have doné those every time such device is available , but again one leg at time. After these knee operations I haven´t tried to do them. No reason I couldn´t do them though.OK bye for now , have to go to work!
