shin splints....

anybody have any suggestions on how to deal with these.... they kill my cardio to the point i cant even stand at times.

Hi Dex...both of my sons had shin splints during track & field season in high school. They were able to solve the problem by buying new shoes from a specialty running store, from a salesman who was really knowledgeable. I suppose you've already tried that, but if not, that's probably the next indicated action.

put a weight plate over your toes and do toe raises. helped me TONS

Shin splints are caused by a muscle imbalance between your calves and your tibialis anterior.(The muscle on the front of your lower leg)I always train my tibbies along with my calves,as I always train antogonistic muscle groups to avoid this very problem.The function of the tibialis is to lift your toes,of course ,the opposite of your calves,to raise your heels.The easiest way to train them would be to do toe raises on a leg press machine.Put your heels at the bottom of the platform to start,and push with your heels as you lift your toes.You may need to experiment with the exact positioning to get the maximum effect.I also attach a strap to a low pulley and place that around the top of my foot.I sit facing the machine and with my heel on the ground I pull my toes towards me.You could sit on the counter with a bucket hanging on your foot and lift that,which is,I believe,what a doctor would prescribe.You get the idea.Whatever you can do to lift your toes against resistance.Stretchung your calves would also help,as you can't fully contract a muscle that's being "held" by it's antagonistic mate.

also , walk w/ your toes up , like doing a curl w/ your feet each time you step. this helped me a little. i get shin splints bad

yah, i wrote this while i was in a lot of pain, if i was in a normal state of mind than maybe i would have just posted it in this forum...but hey, moving posts helps make good mods, lol.
