dextrose for diabetics? help

have a friend who is diabetic and eant to loose weight.
i recommended him TKD diet but he told me he is a diabetic.
can diabetics use dextrose postworkout? if not what would be a good solution instead of dextrose?

Something on the order of the Carnivore Diet would work,although the weekend refeed would have to be restricted in whatever appropriate fashion.I'm pretty sure sugar is not a good idea for a diabetic person.

He can doesn't have to drink dextrose or carbs post workout, have him stick to a low-carb diet and some whey protein PW.

Sorry, I just read this one. Your friend has a few issuse to deal with regarding fat loss, and a few questions about his type pf diabetes need to be answered first.

I do believe a low carb diet is best for him but with that you have to factor in his medical condition and the way most doctors look at it. A 40-30-30 diet (ZONE type diet), although higher in fat, may be easier to take to an apprehensive physcian into trying. IF that's the case, he needs to eat all LOW GLYCEMIC carbs.

First, is he diet controlled, non insulin (oral antihyperglycemic), or insulin dependant (juvenille of adult onset) ? this will affect his medication regimine.

If he is diet controlled or uses oral meds, and combines a low carb diet with proper training, he will probably need to keep a very close eye on blood glucose and do frequent checks. He will probably require less meds.

If he is insulin dependant, he may have to switch to a sliding scale. This is an accurate measure of blood glucose followed by a dose of insulin depending on the glucose # (ie Glucose is 220---5 units reg insulin). He may be on a set # of units in am and pm usually a 70/30 mix of a long lasting insulin and a short acting one.

Now, post workout. Diabetics do not have the ability to transfer the sugar from the blood into the cell...this is why they take insulin or meds to stimulate insulin production. Therefore the dextrose or carbs would not help and if on a low carb diet, will be a hinderance.

FOREMOST, your freind should discuss this idea of a new diet with his DOCTOR. Most doctor/nutrionist are trained in the old high carb, low pro, low fat diet. A drastic change in diet to low carb or clean "zone" type diet along with exercise will cause hormones to change. Your freind should also review the symptomes of hypoglycemia (dizziness, sweating, slurred speach, difficulty focusing, blurred vision, violent behavior, nausea) and be aware that with a new diet and excersize, this can come on FAST and can be DEADLY. Oral glucose should be carried and an Medic Alert bracelet worn. Family and freinds should also be educated on syptoms of hypoglycemia and that if you are unable to swallow because of change in mentation, they cannot give you oral glucose (food or juice) and should call 911.
