Dieting for diabetes and sibling rivalry..............

My older brother has diabetes, and about 6 or 7 years ago I tried to give him a diet and simple exercise routine to help him not rely on insulin at all. He tossed my advice in the trash can because I wasn't a qualified physician; I even asked him to give my advice on paper to HIS PHYSICIAN for approval and he tossed it without a second thought. I just knew that I could get him off insulin if he'd only take my dietary advice, but I wasn't an MD....

He took my advice 6 months ago and has lost 45 lbs. He's 6'6" and was weighing over 300 lbs, but he is now down to 260 now I think. He's doing the cardio and not the weight training (which I recommended), but he is doing the diet I recommended and yesterday the doctor took him completely off of the 100...yes, 100 I.U.'s of insulin he was having to take per day. The doctor told him that he could control his diabetes with his diet and not with insulin as long as he continued his present diet and exercise.

Sibling rivalry gives me the permission to point my finger in his face and exclaim, "Ha! I told ya so!" Right?

Why don't you post up this dietary advice you gave your brother. My dad's a diabetic.

YEAH!! PLEASE DO POST UP! This must have been fate.. i was just about to post in this forum for help w/ that. My mother has diabetes and needs help losing weight. She's been exercising and exercising, but the diet her dr. gave her isn't a good one (he's no nutritionist). She's about to give up, and i need to figure something out. Please do post :-)

I'm a diabetic too. I've never had to take insulin and hopefully will never have to. I just don't overdo it with carbs. No sodas, candy and shit like that. I check my blood sugar every day and just use common sense to avoid the things that I know I shouldn't be taking in anyway.

no. i'm not diabetic... my mom is.. i'm trying to get a diet she can lose bodyfat w/ .. cuz her nutrionist is an idiot.

i am predisposed to it though.

It's pretty tough to make a recommendation that encompasses all diabetics. The amount of insulin that he or she is on (if any at all is a big consideration). If a person is taking insulin, they have to take in a certain amount of carbs or their blood sugar will go too low. Here are some general guidelines though:

Limit fats. Avoid saturated fats (found in animal products) and trans-fatty acids (hard margarines, commercial products, fast foods). In selecting fats or oils, prefer monounsaturated fats (virgin olive oil, canola oil), although also include polyunsaturated oils as well (sunflower, rapeseed). Of note, a 2001 report suggested that trans-fatty acids were a risk factor for diabetes type 2 while polyunsaturated were protective.


Limit dietary cholesterol.


Consume plenty of fiber-rich foods in the form of whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. Includes a daily choice of nuts, seeds, or legumes.


When choosing foods with sugar, choose fresh fruits, but do so in moderation.


Limit protein. In selecting proteins, eat in moderation and prefer fish or soy protein to poultry or meat. (Avoid, in any case, high-fat meats.)


Reduce salt

It is important coordinate food intake with insulin intake to maintain optimal blood sugar levels.
