Know All The Names Sugar Is Hiding In~!!

Sugar, by any other name, would taste just as sweet.
Another strategy the sugar pushers use to get us to consume more calories is to rename the offending ingredient. We know to stay away from sugar, but how about molasses, honey, sorghum, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, glucose, fructose, lactose, dextrose, sucrose, galactose, maltose, or concentrated juices like grape or apple? Another path to profit that the food industry has discovered is that instead of harvesting relatively more expensive sugar cane and beets, the industry can produce sweeteners in a laboratory more cheaply and with just as many calories as beet and cane sugar. And with some sweeteners, especially the popular high fructose corn syrup, it is believed that your body will be less likely to reach satiety than with sugar, so you can consume more. Mo' calories, mo' money. Another advantage to these doses of -oses is that, aside from the fact that many people won't guess they're just different forms of sugar, they can be spread out in the ingredient list required by law, so that it won't be as obvious that what you're consuming is pretty much all sugar. When you look at a list of ingredients on a product, the manufacturer is required to list them in order of amount, from highest to lowest. So they can bury a quarter cup of fructose, a quarter cup of sucrose, a quarter cup of dextrose, and a quarter cup of corn syrup in the middle of the list, so you won't be as likely to notice that when you add them all up, the main ingredient in the product is sugar.

I know a little about sugars and have completely cut sucrose from my diet. I dont mind the natural sugars in the fruit and other natural foods I eat, it's just the processed sugar (sucrose especially.) I am currently using phenylalanine (or whatever is in Equal, too lazy to look it up I guess and dammit all my packages are explained in Thai) as a sweetener. It's a non essential amino acid...some people have a genetic difference which makes it terribly dangerous for them but I am luckily not so afflicted. Do you know if it's a safe alternative? I could do without it altogether and just eat terrible tasting food, I train hard enough that if you put something in front of me that I know has the right ratios of nutrients, I will eat it. I haven't seen anything so far to put me off of it though...what do you think?

Well, B-Diddy, I like Equal as well, and am luck enough that it doesn't bother me in any respect either. So in saying that, I did look into it ingredients before, so I am a little familiar with it!! One thing did you know that it is one of the most thoroughly studied food ingredient, ever!!! There have been more than 200 scientific studies confirming its safey!! Impressive isn't it!! Its main ingredient being aspartame, which converts into two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, as the methyl ester.Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Aspartic acid and phenylalanine are also found naturally in protein containing foods, including meats, grains and dairy products. Methyl esters are also found naturally in many foods such as fruits and vegetables and their juices. Upon digestion, aspartame breaks down into three components (aspartic acid, phenylalanine and a small amount of methanol), which are then absorbed into the blood and used in normal body processes. Neither aspartame nor its components accumulates in the body. These components are used in the body in the same ways as when they are also derived from common foods. So I do believe it is one of the safer choices as far as sugar substitutes, it's definitely the most studied one!!

Now in saying all of that, remember sugar is sugar is sugar!!! LOL So depending on your diet, activity and so on there is a chance of it not getting burned for fuel if over indulged in.

That is pretty darned impressive. Some of the food my wife cooks actually tastes better using Equal than when she used to use sugar. After a few months, I really stopped missing it. I was always a sour or spicy kind of food person rather than sweet eater anyway, so maybe it's easier for me. I've been reading your posts about sugars and will remember to look out for corn syrup too, although my diet and lifestyle isn't so hard to maintain as long as I stay away from American food (you may have guessed I am in ********.) Coffee was a struggle though, I just need that cup when I get up in the morning, and since I have changed to a careful diet I get sooo sleepy after lunch. Because of that, I sometimes have a cup of coffee after lunch before going back to work. Lots of people take albuterol for energy needs right? I'm very happy with my fat/energy burning now and don't want to add anything else to that fire. Haha I could go on forever, and I am sure sometimes it seems like I will...

awesome info IPL!!! a lot of my meals are TERRIBLY bland since i'm not the best cook,and don't like spendin too much time in the kitchen....a couple of them diet colas a day to wash 'em down sure does help me a lot! good news!

Great post. I have cut out all suger for a few months. Now when I have just a little bit, it makes me feel bad. When I first cut it out I really missed it in my coffee, but now I am fine. I can't get equal where I am at right now, but it's not that bad. I put bananas in my oatmeal when I want it sweet. works nice.
