fish/flax oil, how much?

im currently eating to gain mass, 5 or 6 meals a day, mostly protine with some carbs in the morning and befor workouts.

this includes lots of whey, chicken, beef, eggs. i just recently started taking fish oil but im a bit confused on how much to take mg wise.
a bb told me hes at 6000mg a day of fish oil capsules. i see the bottle says 3 caps a day, but with the hi animal protine diet im thinking its not enough.
what are the thoughs of most people on this subject?

i should also add that im currently cycling 750 mg test c and 200 mg deca per week if this matters.

What is the makeup of the caps your taking in regards to EPA and DHA?

Ideally you should be supplementing on a 1:1 ratio with Omega-6 oils if you are aware of how much of that you currently have in your diet. Most people should not need to supplement with Omega-6 as it is more readily available from many foods currently in your diet but I do agree with Omega-3 supplementation.

Typically somewhere around 2500mgs/day of EPA and 1500mgs/day of DHA would be plenty. Those listings should be on your bottle somewhere per capsule and then go from there to decide how many caps to take each day.

it dosent say, only that there 1200 mg caps. containing fish oil epa/dha total omega 3 fatty acids 360mg.

If they don't even have that basic information on them I would say they are junk...sorry.

You need to look for good quality Omega-3 if your going to take them at all. That doesn't mean being lured in by glossy magazine and infomercials that spend big budgets on advertising. You can find good quality low cost Omega-3 too. Most important is to see the break-up of those 2 essential oils (EPA and DHA) and some even offer all 8.

If I see a label like yours then I would leave alone. Firstly it states 1200mg caps but then states it only has 360mgs of Omega-3..WTF! So your getting close to 900mgs of what exactly? An unnamed/unlabelled oil..your essentially wasting your money.

damn im looking at other brands online that do break it down, to get that much (2500 epa and 1500 dha) youd have to eat around 8/12 caps depending on your brand. that seems to be about 10 times the daily recomended amount, not that that matters in this case.

to answer your question access the other stuff besides epa and dha seems to be other oils and fats and such.

ya so it looks like all fish oil caps are not created equil, going by your estimate of 2500/1500 per day access it seems that the more you spend the better, some have a great 500/300 ratio per pill at 1000mg and some are at say 250 150 and 1200mg per pill. if the other stuff in the pills is unneeded fillers and fat and such it definately is better to be picky.

That figure I gave you (2500/1500) is one to show the higher end of the scale as you had mentioned you knew someone who was on 6000mgs/day. I see no need whatsoever to go that high. Even the 2500/1500 is very high and that's a total of 4000mgs/day. Realistically if you have a reasonable diet then somewhere around 1200-1500mgs a day for both would be great. i.e 2400-3000mgs total.

Great info access... You had me paranoid that I just had to go grab my fish oil bottle to double check my values just to make sure I was'nt getting jipped out of my allotted daily values.

One thing I'd like to also add is that it's important to keep your fish oils fresh. I knew that was certainly true about the liquid form but not the caplets.

How do you insure that the fish oil you get is not rancid? It’s actually pretty easy. First, purchase the freshest fish oil capsules you can find. Take them home, and if they are in plastic bottles, put them in glass bottles. Plastic bottles, surprisingly enough, are not totally impervious to air. Glass bottles are impervious to air. Most fish oil is encapsulated using gel caps, which are also not impervious to air. You can’t really reencapsulate the fish oil, so you’ve got to live with the gel caps, but putting them into a glass bottle keeps the air from getting to the gel caps in the first place. Second, put the glass bottle in the refrigerator. The cold will markedly slow down the oxidation process even if a little air gets in the bottle.
