i feel its intensity with me notreally ever proper nutrition and such..20 rep squats alone or followed by stiff legged deads always puts me by the door or the floor..so my vote is intensity alone i guess..i do the yates style of training for all those who have seen his vid or read his book or articles..working up to a top weight for 1-2 sets and failure and beyond into negatives..i also work intensity in on occasion with drop weight sets..really i just alternate the 2 styles if im not involving 20 rep squats..

Sprints alternated with Torso sprints (Upperbody cardio machine) and walking. My bi's get pumped to such an extreme it's actually painful then I start to feel sick. Sprints usually follow 30-40 minutes of cardio.
The 20 rep squat routine that I posted. I usually get sick after the 2nd set of supersets. i just threw up last week with this workout:
i alternated these excercises without a break inbetween, doing 4 sets of each. (it is my buddies workout... i thought it would be simple, and damn was i wrong) started with a set of 12 pull ups, went directly to deads for a set of 12, directly to pushups to failure, directly to hack squats for 12, directly to leg press for 12, and then back to the beginning. Man did i puke my guts out when i got home... barely could drive home.... i just figured it was due to no break between sets, and intensity i guess. If id a known it was gonna be this kind a party, id a dipped my balls in the mash potatoes... |

a combo of intensity and dropping of blood sugar together.
Tomorrow will be the first day of 20rep squats, and I do expect to get sick.lol I'll have a huge carb meal 2 1/2 hours pre=workout, and have a carb beverage on hand as well. Reason I say a combo of both, is because I've done a set of 15 reps on deads with 315 (when I first started them), and was using the heavy breathing techniques as used with the 20 rep squats to get the last 2-3 reps out. I gagged, got lightheaded and then came the headache. After about 10 minutes of rest and 80g of dextrose I felt "OK." Not great, but I could finish most of my workout, so I think its those super-intense sets that deplete your body of its energy... almost too much physical trauma at once. But doing this every week is what makes your body so much better at training, cause the adaptation to such vigorous work is very quick. The level of percieved exertion will reduce with the same workload in the following week, thus the need for weekly progression (MORE WEIGHT). My Mom saw me do a set of deads in the garage at all out intensity... she said, "that can't be good for you." Then, she saw me helping some family move furniture from one house to another (moving days suck.lol). She then saw how conditioned I was, as I was quickly moving heavy objects and not that winded. She said, "never mind what I said the other week, it must be doing some good."lol |

..but I actually "saw stars" when I hit 485 Deadlift the first time. I was working too many Reps in the warm-up 8s & 6s so by time I started heavy singles I was almost running on empty. Got the lift w/out problem put it down HARD stood up straight and was in freakin LaLa land for like 5mins.
