Jump squats?

I have finally broken a bad platue by doing jump squats on the smith machine. I use the to finish up. I recomend peeps giving it a shot. You look like a fool but holy crap

It could help you, but there are other ways to break plateaus.

Jump Squats on a smith should be done with light weight. Heavy weight compressing your back with each jump could land you with a serious back injury... trust me, thats the last thing you want. My back is f'ed and heavy squats are pretty much outta my game now. <img src="http://www.massmonsters.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif" alt="Mad" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin:--> as well as deads. I can't even do traditional deads... have to use a trapbar, which I do like a lot anyways.

Hey RJ and PatK, I think your right if your talking about the exercise from a purely hypertrophy stand point. But, I believe that from a strength stand point there would be some merit to the exercise. By doing the Jump Squats you actually working the nervous system more, training the muscle fibers to fire faster. By doing this you would have cross over to limit strength. If you are familiar w/ West Side Methods for gaining strength you'll notice that 1-2 days a week are dynamic strength days. These are with the core movement(squat, bench, dead) and are performed with sub-maximal percentages(50-65%), and done as fast and explosive as possible. Just my opinion but yea I think there is something to what this guy is saying.

It invlolves a crosstraining principle, and also helps with your proprioception. Explosive work is all fast twitch. So is bb exercises. This is not something i recomend doing all the time however is how i burn out my legs at the end. Grabbing 2 35 lbs dumbells or 135 on the smith works well and i do high reps. Perfect form is a must. It is also a good way just to break up the monatany (did i spell that right).

with the explosive strength statement. I was looking at it as there are other ways to do it. I just don't feel comfortable jumping in the smith rack.

I have used a weighted vest for these types of training methods.

Strap 30lbs. to ya and then do some frog leaps after leg day. Then do some agility drills hoppin' around. I was getting crazy agile and quick until the injuries set in.

I work with athletic trainers... NBA: Tracy McGrady/Mike Miller's trainer (Wayne Hall), GOLF: Ernie Els/Ty Tryon's trainer (Dave Herman) and Football: Shaun Springs, Ike Charlton, Dante Culpepper (Thadius Brown).

So I see quite a bit of different methods. One of the more interesting to watch is the golfer's sessions. They focus so much on core strength and flexibility. Doin' exercises that I've never seen or imagined.lol The trainer also stretches them after the session, which is kinda *** looking.haha

Draws a lot of smart-ass remarks from some, but then again, the trainer is ridin' in a nice Lexus SC430.
