shrugs - any tips

I'm at a point now where I can't lift any heavier weight for doing my shoulder shrugs because my hands simply can't hold the weight. So, I am doing more and more reps, but should be focusing on more weight.

Anyone have problems with this? - I've tried the had exersizes before with no luck - maybe it just takes to long to build up the strength with those crappy spring based things?

Any tips?

Use wrist straps, you can get them at any sports store or online...i could not do heavy shrugs without them..

You could do shrugs in a shrug superset like this........

3 sets with dumbbells max weight for 25-30 reps
3 sets of cable shrugs maxed out for 25-30 reps

or,

3 sets of dumbell shrugs like before
3 sets of smith machine barbell shrugs for 25-30 reps

Do the shrugs on shoulder days near the end of your shoulder routine.

Hell, change it up a bit, do behind the back shrugs. Awkward but not bad. Overhead shrugs hit 'em pretty good too.

go straps or you will never realize full potential strength of your traps. I use 'em just for the heaviest sets and like to use grip strength for lighter but there is no comparison.

gloves or any other aid in the gym, the giants of olympia like Swartzenegger, Zane, Ferrigno, etc... felt that straps and gloves were bad for growing to your fullest potential. You can use all the supplements in your arsenal but how will it really make you develop to your best? Its only a cheat and you have to know just what cheats you can use to keep lagging parts growing and the better parts of you lagging behind to make the cut.

Do you deadlift? That in itself is the best way to increase your grip strength. You may also want to get in touch with Ironmind and check out their grip products.

A trap exercise that I have found useful is to take a cambered bar and sit on the end of a bench. Position the bar under your thighs with the camber ed part of the bar in a downward orientation. This will allow you to shrug relatively heavy and the camber keeps the bar from hitting your legs.

get chalk and use an over under hand grip. get in a power rack, set the support bars to a 1/4 squat length. this will allow you to only have to pick the bar up about 4 or 5 inches. i have had unbelievable success with the new grip, chalk, and rack setting. i've gotten 545lbs for 10.
