Default Lifting belt causing pain in low abs

I noticed that the since I started using my new powerlifting belt I get a very sharp pain in my lower right ab area right next to the hip bone. Sometimes I get nervous and think it is a hernia. It goes right away when I end the set and take off the belt. What can I do to combat this. Or should I just use this pain as a deferal away from teh pain of the targeted muscle group. LOL.

I think it might be too tight and maybe I could move it higher. I just dont want to go to high and not protect the low back though.

I don't even own a belt; left my last one in the gym 8 years ago and never replaced it.

I agree.I've squatted 495 x 15,without a belt or wraps.I believe a belt fosters weakness,personally.If you stay within your abilities and gradually push those abilities,your lower back will become stronger out of necessity.Supporting it artificially can accomplish nothing worthwhile,IMO.

I agree - never squatted with a belt. I've done Oly for a while and never used one. I think they prevent the lower back from getting stronger. I've always been taught to do standing good mornings. Yeah, they do the trick.

About your squats: 495 x 15. Wow... I thought my 495 for doubles on stop squats was good. I need to train more.

i agree w/ strapping young lad, i went down to a weight i knew i'd be comfortable not using a belt with and worked my way up and i never have issues w/ not using one. My best set is 405 lbs for a set of 5, not amazing numbers or anything but its the most i've attempted thus far and did so w/ out a belt or knee wraps and no problems. I actually don't use any lifting gear what so ever, i think lifting straps are the worst idea ever, why prevent grip from getting stronger and forearmes getting bigger as a side benefit of deads or bent rowes or whatever you might use them for. I would only want a belt for a one rep max attempt, like in a PL meet, thats it.
