Default Back Injury

Hey guys here's my little story:

My routine is 5x5 so Im doing squats 3 times a week. However, on Wednesday, or "light day", I do 1 set at 50%, 1 set at 60%, 1 rep at 70%, and another rep at 75%. So I'm not even maxing out.

Anyways, I was squatting and I kind of cheated and "pushed up" with my back instead of my legs. I immediately felt a dull pain in the middle of my back on the left side. Anyways, I thought nothing of it, so after I finished my set of squats I proceeded to do 5 sets of full weight of DEADLIFTS (I actually set a record on my last set).

During the set of deads my lower back felt fine. This pain was above the lower back, in the middle.

Today, I can't rotate my body too much to the left or right without my back hurting. I think it's a pulled muscle.

Any1 else ever had this happen? Can I still go to the gym and do non leg and back excercises, or should I just take a break for a week?

It's your erector spinae.

Dude, first, I don't think I'd be doing squats 3 times a week maxing out or not. Second, I think it's bad idea to do squats and deads in the same day. Just my .02 I would say to give it a little rest. I'm not a big fan of pushing through injuries because it takes them longer to heal, in my experience.

I use a very popular strength program called "5x5", which calls for squats 3 times a week.

The 2nd time around is a "light set", though, only at 60-65% at max.

Full on squats 3 times a week would be murder

my suggestion is 3 fold:

1) stop squatting 3x/wk...there is no point to such over-training. I bet I can push you thru a leg workout for 2 hrs. where you'll throw up and it'll be better then the 3 days combined. For now, NO squats period....

2) you need a lot of relaxation on the muscle group ... go to a sauna then a jacuzzi, and spend a good few hours relaxing

3) get a chiropractor and a massage therapist, that's what you need now
