what karate warm ups can i do myself before class?

matt sit down on the ground with your legs straight out in front of you, without causing yourself some pain reach forward toward your toes. this will keep you from pulling anything while doing kicks.
borrow a bo from one of the guys in class and prop it up on your shoulders and put your arms over it like the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz did. Gently sway from one side to the other.

jogging in place for 5 minutes is usually a pretty good warm up if you dont have a lot of space.

You are asking what warm-ups to do before class. This supposes that there are warm-ups and stretching done at the beginning of the training session. It would be negligent for an instructor to simply move into forms, one-steps and kata without this.

I expected my students to quietly perform some basic stretches before formal class began. I would recommend you purchase "Stretching" by Bob Anderson and perform one of the groups he offers for those in the martial arts. Concentrate on the legs and hips from toes up to abs.

Matt, I would stick with warmups where you're moving around and active as opposed to Stretching as this will be most effective for preventing muscle pulls and such.
