Deadlifts are one of my single most favorite exercises right next to squatting! There are plenty of men at my gym that incorporate DL's into thier routine and when I first started out I had some really good guidance in nailing down my form first before working on driving up my numbers. I've never seen hooks being used but the majority of fellas that I observe use straps to help with thier grip.... and I'm talking about guys that pull 400lbs+. I'm a weeney in that I have to use gloves the straps are just to awkward for me. I feel really fortunate in that I have a really strong lower body in comparison to my upper body so doing legs and back is one of my stronger points. When I started DL'ing it did'nt take me long before I was hitting and pulling 175 well that is until my sciatic nerve started to flare up and put me out of commission for attempting to lift any heavier. Honestly, I think now it's more of a psych issue in that I'm just afraid straining myself to the point that I dont want to be laid up on the couch for a week and crippled over in pain. Been there, done that and I dont want it to happen again. Anyway, so now I've backed down to a comfortable 135-155 and just do more sets. Is that wrong, I dunno. All I do know is that dl'ing has really helped me shape up my derrier and legs nicely... I'll never stop doing them.
One thing I've never felt comfortable in doing the double overhand grip technique. Overhand/underhand works really well for me however is there really an issue in how your hands should be placed. Is one way better than the other? Just wondering. |

I agree totally with Adam F.I used to never deadlift and a few months ago i started.Ur lower back gets ripped.I personally think its a great excercise even for the legs.I found it tough gettin my from correct but its spot on now.I couldnt leave them out.Def a mass building excercise.By the way excellent post.

i have trouble with technique alot and always a little paranoid if people in the gym are watching me and laughing lol ... my 1rm so far is 170kg ...about 360lb....

Deadlifts are a staple of my back workout routine. For back thickness you can not beat them. Just pick up this months Flex magazine. They have the "20 Best Backs of All Time" and just about everyone from the old timers to the current champions incorporates Deadlifts into their workouts. As for the grip, I seem to get a better and heavier lift with straps and the over/under technique.

a few hours after you posted this topic i read it and my follow up visits to the gym have incorporated deadlifts into my back exercise and OMG!!! every muscle in my back is so sore right now! lower back, middle back, upper back, and traps... i havent felt this sore in a while! LoL i went to sports authority last week to buy some more athletic shorts and a weight belt for squatting etc.. and she rung up my shorts and the belt ($30 sticker on it) and it came up for 67 cents i didnt notice until after i left but i was like saaaa- weeettt!

I couldn't agree more. The deadlift is one of the essential, 'core' lifts you can do, and like you said along with the squat.
