Gold´s logo question

Since you were behind the logo of the famous Gold´s Gym did you trademark it ? I mean right away or years after. ....
Speaking of the old Gold´s how would you describe the overall athmosphere there? Musta been something like it was called "mecca of bbuilding". Did they play music there or was it just grunting and plates making the sounds ? Read somewhere it was an easygoing place. No hurry would that have meant ? Thank u . Have a nice summer!:bigsmile

I never signed a release for the logo and still haven't they just took it and used it , then sold the gym a few times and still used it. Rather than go back and sue them for it, I renegotiated a deal on it last year for royalties. Who knew it was going to take off like that.

Gold's back then was much different than it is today. It was a laid back atmosphere, no music a few people, some of the best. Always open from 5 am to 11 or so. Joe Gold owned it but most of the time was at the beach playing paddle tennis. So you'd just walk in and train. Sometimes he charged people and many times he didn't. IF you paid by the year, it was $60 and if you didn't have any money, he'd let it slide.

def different world ! I remember seeing an issue about some wise ass at Gold´s trying to charge Dorian Yates while he still was competing.....( no matter sould be if he wasn´t either).
I really like old photos of Gold´s . No chrome , just rust steel , and simple looking apparatus . Free weights , lotsa dumbbels... That´s what I would call a gym. I think something is lost if things are taken too much to teh side of chrome and the fancy stuff( colours , lightning..) . Music is yes but not necessary.
Good you got at least something back from that logo of yours. I asked since I wondered about the pic you sent about Hulk Hogan wearing the shirt. I think I saw your name there too. My old Gold´s shirt was not like that.

golds has gone downhill IMO...not hardcore anymore - abroad, Golds is like 24 hours fitness!:argh

The more corporate Gold's becomes the less original it will stay. I was just thinking about that. They moved all the offices out of Venice to Dallas TX where they run the corporation just as if it were Denny's Restaurants. All that is left is the gym and pro shop, run by a bunch of younger people off the streets who have no knowledge of the history of the gym and what it represents. It really saddens me to see that.

I was asked by a friend a few years ago if I would paint murals in his gyms of the old school such as Venice Beach, etc.... He didn't request anything relating to Gold's, but bb'ers on the beach working out, etc... I designed the signage and other logos for him, but would wonder if there are legal pitfalls to anything Venice Beach related for mural paintings in any of his gyms.
