Nipple Piercings--the basics
Nipple Piercings
Nipple piercings can be done horizontally or vertically through a nipple. It is also possible to have multiple piercings through the nipple.
The jewelry used for nipple piercings is usually a minimum of 12 gauge for women and 14 gauge for men. A thinner gauge can often be used for men because their nipples are generally smaller. The jewelry used for the piercing can be either a ring or a straight barbell. Although a ring will allow for easier cleaning during the healing period, it is often advisable for women, especially those with larger nipples, to be pierced with a bar. This is done because the jewelry is less likely to be inadvertently tugged on during daily activities. The extra pressure that is present with a ring can cause jewelry to migrate, especially in a new piercing. When a nipple is pierced with a straight barbell, a longer bar is chosen to allow for cleaning. If you are interested in getting your nipple pierced, consult with a knowledgeable piercer to find out what kind of jewelry is best for you.
The healing time for nipple piercings is about 2 to 3months. During this time the piercing should be cleaned twice a day. Oral contact during the healing time should also be avoided, as it can result in infection.
Many people experience increased sensation with nipple piercings. Piercing can also make the nipple appear larger in some individuals. Although many people are concerned about female nipple piercings affecting a woman's ability to nurse a child, piercing one or both nipples will not prevent nursing.
