I'm a licensed masseur, so I'll quit being an ass and give you a few tips...

Even though you may feel most of the tension in your neck, it's often the trapezius muscle that is the culprit. If it's too tense or tight {which it generally is}, all of the surrounding muscles will be effected.

Without digging your fingertips into your neck muscles {use the top two digits {the top half basically} of your fingers, not your finger tips}, gently squeeze and knead one of your traps firmly. Do this for around a minute and then switch to the other shoulder. Use a pressure that is slightly painful. Not tortuous, but a "good hurt." You can also do this with a tennis ball or something similar if your fingers get tired.

Put your right hand behind your neck, gently squeezing your neck muscles on the right side of your spine. As you do so, move your shoulders up in the direction of your ears, hold for a few seconds and then relax. Take the right hand away and do this with the left one. Repeat three to five times.

Clasp your hands tightly and place them on the back of your neck, like the cops make you do, place them on your neck instead of behind your head. Pull forward with them like you're trying to pull them through your neck. Hold for several seconds, release and then do the same several more times.

With one hand at a time, gently and firmly rub the back of your neck in circular motions on each side of your spine. Begin at the base of your neck and work up.

After doing all of this, stretch your neck well. Lean your head as far to the right as you can and hold for twenty seconds. Do this for the left side, straight back and then forward for twenty seconds each. Repeat this process several times throughout the day and you'll feel much better.

You could also put a heating pad on it, but massage is significantly more effective.

That's some very useful info MP. I suffer from some shitty neck problems and I'm ALWAYS in pain to some degree. I'll have to give this a try.

Many people suffer from this problem. It's largely due to poor posture. It helps to be more conscious of it. Keep your shoulders rolled back, your head held high and your chest puffed out. It takes time to overcome poor posture habits as over time your body becomes hardwired to sit and stand incorrectly. Once you improve your posture you'll find you have far less aches and pains, you'll recover faster and more completely from lifting and you'll be more attractive to the opposite sex too.

I'd recommend massaging and stretching your neck and shoulders every day regardless of whether you feel any pain or tightness or not. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure after all.

In addition, I highly recommend following an "extreme stretching" protocol as outlined here by SYL if you don't already. It makes a huge difference in recovery time and will likely reduce soreness, aches and improve your posture naturally.

I wish my problem was that simple. Two herniated discs and arthitis in three. Getting old blows.......Massage and stretches help greatly though.

It would help to get yourself a decent Chiro.... And they're hard to find.

I go to one of the best in the world, Dr. Bones. Course it helps that he knows of me from the old days.

A decent chiro will work wonders. A bad one will screw you up.

Yep, I see one every now and again. I got some info on a new one that does acupuncture and massage as well who is supposed to be great. I'll be checking that out soon. My neurologist put me on neurontin to alleviate a pinched nerve but that shit makes me a real asshole.
