Any sensible approach to losing bodyfat (dieting) requires a sensible counterpart of exercise
That being said, weight-training should be at the core of your "plan". Cardio is an ideal adjuct (but NOT completely necessary) if your goal is to lose fat a little faster or when you simply have more fat to lose.
